How to Maintain Lash Infills Between Appointments

How to Maintain Lash Infills Between Appointments

Fresh lash infills should look soft, full and effortlessly polished – not clumped, twisted or patchy within a few days. Knowing how to maintain lash infills comes down to a few consistent habits that protect both your extensions and your natural lashes. The goal is not to avoid touching them altogether. It is to keep the lash line clean, prevent unnecessary pulling and arrive at each refill appointment with healthy natural lashes ready for beautiful new extensions.

Your lash technician can create a customised set that suits your eye shape, lifestyle and desired level of volume. What happens between appointments matters just as much. Retention is influenced by your natural lash cycle, skin type, home care, makeup routine and even how you sleep.

The first 24 to 48 hours matter

The adhesive used for eyelash extensions needs time to fully set. For the first 24 hours after an infill, keep your lashes away from water, steam and heavy sweating where possible. This means skipping the sauna, steam room, hot yoga and long, steamy shower directly onto the face.

After this initial period, clean lashes are essential. A common mistake is continuing to avoid water because it feels safer. In reality, leaving oil, makeup, sweat and natural skin build-up along the lash line can interfere with retention and affect the appearance of your infills. Once the curing period has passed, regular gentle cleansing is part of proper lash care.

If you have naturally oily skin or exercise frequently, your lash line may need more attention than someone with dry skin and a lighter makeup routine. This is not a sign that your extensions are poor quality. It simply means your maintenance routine needs to match your lifestyle.

How to maintain lash infills with daily cleansing

Clean your lash extensions every day, or at least whenever you have worn eye makeup, sunscreen or had a sweaty workout. Use a lash-safe, oil-free cleanser and a soft cleansing brush designed for eyelash extensions. Apply the cleanser gently around the eyelid and lash line, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Avoid rubbing side to side. Instead, use soft downward or upward strokes around the eye area, depending on your technician’s aftercare advice. Pat the face dry with a clean towel and allow the lashes to dry naturally, or use a cool setting from a small fan. Once dry, brush them lightly with a clean spoolie.

A clean lash line helps extensions stay separated and fluffy. It also reduces the chance of makeup residue building up at the base of the lashes, where it can leave a set looking uneven before your next appointment.

Choose products that suit extensions

Oil-based eye creams, cleansing balms, waterproof mascara and heavy cream cleansers can weaken the adhesive bond or leave residue behind. Check the products you use around the eyes, including concealer, sunscreen and makeup remover. A product does not need to be applied directly to the lashes to transfer oil to them throughout the day.

You do not usually need mascara with lash extensions. If you choose to wear it, use only a lash-extension-safe formula on the tips, not at the roots, and remove it carefully. Waterproof mascara is best avoided because it takes more rubbing and stronger cleansers to remove.

Eyeliner can also affect retention when it is waxy, oily or difficult to take off. Powder liner is often easier to remove than a thick gel or long-wear liquid formula, but it still needs to be cleansed away completely at the end of the day.

Brush gently, not constantly

A clean spoolie is useful for keeping your lash infills neat, especially after sleeping, showering or cleansing. Brush through dry lashes gently from the middle to the tips. There is no need to brush repeatedly or force the spoolie through a tangle. If an extension catches, stop and use a light touch to separate it rather than pulling.

Lashes can naturally shift slightly as your own lashes grow. A small amount of movement does not mean you should pick at them. Picking is one of the fastest ways to remove extensions prematurely and may pull out natural lashes before they are ready to shed.

If you notice one extension turned awkwardly or sitting lower than the rest, do not trim it or attempt to remove it yourself. A trained technician can assess whether it needs professional removal or whether it can wait until your scheduled refill.

Protect lashes while you sleep and exercise

Sleeping face-down presses lashes into the pillow and can cause them to bend, twist or shed sooner. Back sleeping is ideal, but side sleeping is realistic for many clients. A silk or satin pillowcase can reduce friction compared with a rough cotton surface, and keeping your face close to the edge of the pillow may help prevent direct pressure on the lashes.

After exercise, cleanse the lash line rather than allowing sweat and oil to sit there for hours. This is particularly helpful if you train before work or wear sunscreen daily. Chlorine and salt water can also leave residue, so rinse and cleanse after swimming.

Be mindful of heat too. Opening a very hot oven, standing over a barbecue, using a sauna or directing a hair dryer towards the face can affect the curl or shape of synthetic lashes. Normal day-to-day warmth is fine, but prolonged direct heat is best avoided.

Do not pull, squeeze or curl your extensions

Extensions should never be removed by pulling. The adhesive is attached to a natural lash, so tugging can damage the natural lash or create gaps that are difficult to disguise at your next infill. If you are ready for a change of style or need a full removal, book professional removal rather than trying to loosen them at home.

Lash curlers are also unnecessary and can crimp both extensions and natural lashes. Avoid squeezing the lashes between fingers, rubbing your eyes or resting your face in your hands. These small habits are easy to overlook, yet they put repeated pressure on the lash line.

For contact lens wearers, remove lenses before cleansing where possible and avoid pulling at the eyelid while inserting or removing them. If your eyes feel irritated, watery or unusually uncomfortable, do not continue rubbing the area. Contact your technician or seek appropriate medical advice if symptoms persist.

Time your refill appointments around your lash cycle

Natural lashes shed continuously, which means eyelash extensions shed with them. This is completely normal. An infill replaces extensions that have shed and removes outgrown extensions where needed, restoring the balance, shape and fullness of your set.

Most clients benefit from infills every two to three weeks, though the right timing depends on your natural growth cycle, the fullness of your original set and your home care. A lighter, natural set may look ready for a refill sooner than a fuller set, while clients with fast lash shedding or oily skin may also need more regular maintenance.

Waiting too long can turn an infill into a more extensive appointment because there may not be enough extensions remaining to refill evenly. Booking ahead helps you maintain a polished result and allows your technician to preserve the style that suits you best.

Come to your appointment with clean lashes

On the day of your infill, arrive without eye makeup, mascara, strip lash adhesive or oily products around the eyes. Clean lashes give your technician the best possible foundation for precise application and strong retention. If there is heavy makeup build-up to remove, it can take valuable time away from creating your fresh new set.

It is also helpful to tell your technician about any changes since your last visit. This may include new skincare, medication, eye irritation, a holiday involving swimming, or a change in how your lashes have been shedding. Small details can help guide the right products, styling and maintenance advice for you.

Know when to book sooner

A little shedding is expected, but sudden excessive loss, persistent itching, redness, swelling or discomfort are not things to ignore. Stop using new eye products that may be irritating the area and contact your lash professional for advice. Do not try to cover irritation with makeup or add strip lashes over extensions.

Likewise, if you have an important event coming up, avoid leaving your infill until the last minute. Booking a few days before the occasion gives your lashes time to settle and gives you confidence that your look is fresh, balanced and camera-ready.

Beautiful lash infills are designed to make daily beauty maintenance easier, not create another complicated routine. Clean them gently, keep hands away from the lash line and return for regular professional care. With the right habits and a refill schedule that suits your natural lashes, you can enjoy a consistently full, refined finish that supports your confidence every day.
